I have been taking my car to Primarily Japanese since I got it, which was several years ago. These guys are thorough, honest, service oriented and kind. They go out of their way to make sure each service is clarified before doing it. Quality work, great service!

Needed a very thorough diagnosis to see if it was worth repairing my car and got exactly that; very detailed breakdown with photos of everything.

Professional, courteous, honest, fair price, competent. Jacob was great to work with. They fixed my daughter’s car perfectly. I will come back. My only feedback is that it took a bit longer than expected. Their app and communication was superb. I recommend to leverage that tool to let owners know about progress. Thank you!

I have used Primarily Japanese for over 20 years and wouldn't use anyone else.

I was having a starting issue with my vehicle. Having replaced the starter relay, the battery and the starter itself, I was at the limit of my ability to determine the issue. Although P.J. was (eventually) able to solve this issue, the experience as a whole was not a good one. First, they didn't seem to actually have time for the job. After the vehicle had been there for a week they finally looked at it and provided an estimate. This is when doubt crept in. The vehicle was there for a non-start condition only, yet the first estimate comes back with a line item of almost $500 to replace rubber bushings on the shift linkage. This was not related to the issue I brought it in for. In fact, this work is completely unnecessary. If this was presented to someone who doesn't know much about fixing cars, and had they agreed to it, this would qualify as a scam in my book. Concerned, I went in and politely spoke with the G.M. of the shop. He managed to stay more or less professional, but was clearly feeling defensive. I declined the bushing replacement (still working fine) and asked them to please focus on solving the issue I brought it in for. (The other item on that estimate was for the position sensor on the transmission, which was actually bad.) After 2 1/2 weeks of the vehicle mostly just sitting outside their shop (I pass it on the way to and from work) they let me know they had replaced the starter (again) and that the vehicle was ready. I still don't know how the brand new (dealer re-furb) starter I put in was somehow bad, but the vehicle does now start. That said, when I finally got the vehicle back is when I became truly dissatisfied. They gave me back a starter, claiming it was the new one I had just put in before I brought it to them. It wasn't. It was a very dirty, older unit with significant exterior damage. They told me that Toyota would accept it as a return and that P.J. needed the third starter (my original core) to get their core deposit back. Toyota informed me that they could not accept a return on that starter because their policy on them is replacement only. The dealer also said that they work with P.J. often, and that P.J. knows this policy (meaning I was given a falsehood). It also didn't help that I was not given back the same starter I bought from Toyota. All of this meant I was going to have to eat the cost of the starter I bought from Toyota (about $200), in addition to paying about double retail price for the aftermarket one P.J. installed. (I know markups are common, but this felt really aggressive. Toyota did accept the battered mystery starter as my core return in the end, saving me 60 bucks.) The next thing I encountered was that the freshly painted vehicle was absolutely filthy, and not from being left outside (though it was). As far as I can guess, they must have been power washing other vehicles right next to mine and just letting the dirty overspray cover it. Maybe rinse the thing off or something instead of giving it back to me all trashed? Takes 5 minutes. There were also greasy hand-prints on the interior, especially the driver's door. After getting the vehicle home, I also found the the engine bay fuse panel had not been reassembled. It was half taken apart such that the cover couldn't be closed, and they just left it that way - the electrical connections collecting dust and moisture. The customer should not have to finish buttoning up their own vehicle, at least not at this price. Experiences are subjective, and I have no doubt that others have had good experiences at this business. I did not. I just want other potential customers be aware that you still need to be cautious and keep an eye on things, even at a well-reviewed business like this. I believe that P.J. is more used to dealing with customers that may not have the 30 years’ experience fixing vehicles that I do, and that they will try to sell you stuff you don't need if they can. They are not there to help you or to be your friend. They are there to take your money, and they'll take as much as you're willing to give.

We cannot say enough good things about Primarily! Our interactions with both Rick and Jacob have been excellent and the quality of work and attention to detail / care has been outstanding. Another great visit with Primarily Japanese Auto Service. It's real peace of mind for us to have them work on our '04 Nissan Armada. Their thorough examination, tire rotation and oil change prepares our car for both winter and summer driving.

Perry is my go to guy!

Primarily Japanese are professionals. They did a terrific job with my vehicle and found an issue the Honda dealership missed. Moreover, while Hinda told me I needed a new condenser, Primarily Japanese said that my condenser was fine and needs nothing. During my last car service there was a misunderstanding on the phone about the services I approved, and they changed the transmission fluid without me approving it. When I received the invoice I explained that this was a service I had not approved because I had it done a week prior to taking my car to them, and Perry issued me a refund without me having to even show him the receipt. Primarily Japanese is where I will be taking my car from here on.

You have taken care of both my car for the last 15 years. I can honestly say that you have always provide the best professional service. The reason I have never had any auto problems is because you have the best technicians and provide outstanding advise on what maintenance needs to be completed. This only demonstrates your integrity in the way you do business.

I’ve been coming to this shop since I moved to Tucson 6 years ago. They came highly recommended and they have not disappointed! They always do an excellent job working on my Honda. I never feel overcharged or that they try to add unnecessary services. They have very honest conversations about what exactly is needed urgently in my car, and they also will give me a heads up about what maintenance may be coming down the pipeline. I have referred others here and will continue to do so as long as I live in Tucson.

Jan 17, 2025

Was recommended by a friend. Great experience from the start. Wonderful communication regarding detailed plans for repair with pictures and explanations. I will be a returning customer in the future. I feel they are good people with honsesty/integrity. Truly thankful to have been customer.

Always a good experience here. I trust them completely, to the point that I’ve moved across town and they’re still the only place I take my car. They likely won’t be your bargain guys, but I know they won’t be charging me for things I don’t need or trying to scare me with unnecessary repairs. Honest and competant!

Jan 07, 2025

As is always the case, great, accurate, on time service. The folks at the shop do exactly what they sign up to do.

Jan 07, 2025

PRIMARILY JAPANESE IS THE BEST VEHICLE REPAIR PLACE IN TUCSON!! We have been taking all of our vehicles—cars, trucks, SUVs—to them for many years and have NEVER been anything but pleased with their service. The staff is always friendly and helpful. However, we will miss Rick when he retires at the end of this year. Good Luck 🍀 in your Next Chapter, Rick! We always recommend Primarily Japanese to everyone without reservations.
